How does a stock split affect shares and price?
A stock split changes the number of shares and the theoretical price per share while leaving total position value unchanged at the instant of the split.
How to use this tool
For a new-to-old ratio A:B, new shares = existing shares × A ÷ B and theoretical new price = old price × B ÷ A. Both ratio values must be positive.
Example
A 2-for-1 split turns 100 shares priced at $60 into 200 shares priced at $30. Both positions have a theoretical value of $6,000.
Understanding your result
A reverse split uses the same formula with fewer new shares per old share. Market prices can move independently, and brokers or issuers may handle fractional shares with cash payments instead of fractional holdings.
